On its own, dermaplaning takes about 30 minutes. Because skin renews on roughly a monthly cycle, most people space appointments every three to four weeks, which is about how long it takes to build up a fresh layer of dead surface cells. Added to a full facial, plan for the length of the facial plus a few extra minutes.

What is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a physical exfoliation. A licensed esthetician holds a sterile, surgical-grade blade at an angle to your skin and gently scrapes off the layer of dead surface cells along with the fine, downy hair most people call peach fuzz. No cuts and no numbing. Just the dull, built-up top layer coming off in one pass, and the soft vellus hair that sits on it.

Here is the thing most people ask first, so we will answer it plainly: the peach fuzz grows back exactly the way it was. Not thicker, not darker, not coarser. That old worry is a myth. Vellus hair is fine and soft by nature, and dermaplaning does not touch the follicle or change how the hair grows. If regrowth ever feels a little stubbly for a day or two, that is only the blunt tip of a freshly cut hair, not a change in the hair itself.

What you get is upkeep and glow. Skin looks smoother and brighter, makeup sits flat instead of catching on tiny hairs, and the serum or moisturizer you already use goes on more evenly once the dead-cell buildup is out of the way. Your esthetician cleanses your face, then glides the sterile blade across the skin in short feathering strokes. Most clients describe the feeling as a soft scratching. Closer to relaxing than uncomfortable. No numbing needed.

Skin may be slightly pink for 30 to 60 minutes after. You can wear makeup immediately and head straight to work or whatever's next on your day. Skip retinol and acids for 24 to 48 hours and wear SPF daily for the next week. Freshly exfoliated skin burns faster.

Inside a dermaplaning appointment

The appointment is short. On its own, dermaplaning runs about 30 minutes and costs $90. We cleanse, then work the blade across your skin in small, even strokes, section by section, and finish with product and sun protection. There is nothing to numb and nothing that should hurt. Done right, most people describe it as a soft scratch, no more than that.

It also adds beautifully onto a facial. Booked together with a full facial, the two run $225, and the order helps: clearing the peach fuzz and dead skin first means the facial's masks and serums reach cleaner skin. Some people also dermaplane right before a chemical peel for the same reason, though that is a call we make together based on your skin that day.

Downtime is essentially none. You can put makeup on and go back to work the same hour. Skin that runs sensitive may look faintly pink for an hour or two afterward, and that settles on its own. We will tell you to keep sunscreen on and skip harsh scrubs for a day or so while the fresh surface is exposed.

How often depends on you, but every three to four weeks is the usual rhythm, and it is not arbitrary. Your skin renews itself on roughly a monthly cycle, so a single pass takes off about a cycle's worth of dead surface cells. Space it much closer than that and you are exfoliating skin that has not finished turning over, which can leave it irritated instead of glowing. For a lot of clients it becomes a standing tune-up between facials.

The hair-grows-back-thicker myth, debunked

Before your first dermaplaning treatment

Be clear on what dermaplaning is for. It is surface maintenance, a fresh, smooth, bright finish, not a fix for anything deep. It will not erase set-in wrinkles, raised or pitted scars, or stubborn pigment like melasma, and we would rather say so than let you book it expecting that. If those are your real concerns, a series of chemical peels, laser, or another resurfacing option is the honest route, and we are glad to point you there. Microdermabrasion is another surface-exfoliation option if you want to compare.

A few people should wait or skip it. If you are in an active acne breakout, dermaplaning is the wrong week for it: running a blade over inflamed, pustular skin can irritate it and spread bacteria, so we hold off until it calms. The same goes for a cold sore anywhere near the area, or skin that is very sensitive or prone to rosacea flares. If you have taken isotretinoin (Accutane) recently, tell us, since your skin needs time to recover its normal healing first. When in doubt, a short consultation sorts out whether today is the right day.

What is dermaplaning?

No. That's a persistent myth. Dermaplaning removes vellus hair at the surface—it doesn't affect the hair follicle or change the hair's color, texture, or growth pattern. Vellus hair grows back at the same baseline. Coarser facial hair (chin, upper lip) is a different type entirely and isn't typically treated with dermaplaning.

Will dermaplaning make my hair grow back thicker or darker?

Every 3–4 weeks. Vellus hair grows back at that rate, and your skin's full cell turnover cycle is roughly 28 days. Treating more frequently doesn't add benefit. Many patients schedule it before events for the flawless-makeup effect.

How often should I get dermaplaning?

Not at all. It feels like a slight scratchy or tickling sensation. The blade glides over your skin at a specific angle. Most patients find it relaxing. No anesthesia needed.

Does dermaplaning hurt?

Generally yes—it's mechanical exfoliation without chemicals, so it's appropriate for many sensitive skin types. We avoid dermaplaning on active acne, broken skin, sunburn, or active rosacea flares. Otherwise it's well-tolerated across skin types.

Is dermaplaning safe for sensitive skin?

Yes—commonly combined with facials, chemical peels, and Glo2 treatments. Dermaplaning before a peel allows deeper product penetration. Before a facial mask, the active ingredients absorb better. We can add it to most other treatments for an enhanced result.

Can dermaplaning be combined with other treatments?

Dermaplaning ranges from $90 (Dermaplane Only) to $225 when combined with a longer facial. Members receive discounted pricing. We recommend pairing with a facial for the best value.

How much does dermaplaning cost in Lubbock?

Can I dermaplane during pregnancy?

Minimal. Skin may feel slightly tight for a few hours. Mild redness possible but uncommon. Skip exfoliating products (acids, retinoids, scrubs) for 2–3 days. Use heavy moisturizer and SPF immediately. Don't pick at skin.

What's the recovery from dermaplaning?

Indirectly—removing dead skin and vellus hair makes lines less noticeable and allows your products (especially serums and retinoids) to penetrate better, which improves their efficacy. Dermaplaning itself doesn't build collagen. For deeper lines, pair with microneedling or peels over a series.

Will dermaplaning help with fine lines?

Not directly. We avoid dermaplaning over active acne (the blade can spread bacteria). For acne scarring (the textural kind), microneedling is far more effective. Dermaplaning is maintenance, not treatment for those concerns.
