How long a laser hair removal appointment takes
Session length depends on the area. A small spot like the upper lip takes a few minutes, while a large area such as the legs or back can run over an hour. Results come from a series, most areas need six or more sessions spaced a few weeks apart.
What kind of treatment is laser hair removal?
A non-invasive, in-office laser treatment. Because hair grows in cycles, it is delivered as a series, most areas need six or more sessions spaced a few weeks apart, with occasional maintenance over time.
Where we laser
Nearly any area with unwanted hair: upper lip, chin, underarms, bikini, back, arms, and legs. Priced per session by area, from $75 for small areas to $375 for large ones, with a discount on a series of six.
What laser hair removal treats
Best for unwanted dark hair, and it works fastest with good contrast between dark hair and lighter skin. It does not work on white, gray, blonde, or red hair, which have too little pigment for the laser to target, electrolysis is the option there. Candidacy and skin-tone suitability are set at consultation.

Our Laser Hair Removal Services
Light-based, lasting hair reduction that targets the pigment in the follicle
What is laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal uses focused light to target the pigment inside your hair follicles. The science behind it is called selective photothermolysis: the laser sends out a wavelength of light that melanin, the pigment that gives hair its color, soaks up far better than the surrounding skin does. That light turns to heat inside the follicle, and the heat damages the structures that grow the hair. Fewer working follicles means less hair, and what does grow back tends to come in finer and lighter over a series of sessions.
Here is the honest part a lot of places skip. The FDA clears lasers for permanent hair reduction, not permanent hair removal. Those are two different claims. Reduction means a real, lasting drop in how much hair regrows. Removal, gone for good, every follicle, is a claim the FDA reserves for electrolysis. Hair grows from millions of follicles, and some that sat dormant during your treatments can switch on later from hormones or age, so we will never promise a permanently hairless result. What laser does well is thin hair out substantially and keep it that way.
It is one of the most-booked treatments on our laser and light menu, and for good reason: for the right candidate it trades years of shaving and waxing for a handful of sessions. Whether you are the right candidate is a conversation we have at your consultation, and it comes down mostly to two things, your hair color and your skin tone.
The 15 to 60 minutes inside your laser hair removal session
Each laser hair removal session runs 15 to 60 minutes depending on the area treated. The sensation is often compared to a rubber-band snap against the skin. Most clients describe it as tolerable. Topical numbing cream is available on request for sensitive areas like the bikini line or upper lip.
Treated areas may be slightly red and warm for a few hours, similar to a mild sunburn. Some clients see small bumps that resolve overnight. You can shower normally and return to most daily activities immediately — just avoid sweating and heat for 24 hours.
Stay out of the sun and skip the self-tanner for 2 weeks before and after each session. Don't wax, pluck, or thread between sessions — those remove the follicle target. Shaving and trimming are fine. Use daily SPF. Expect noticeable hair reduction after 2 to 3 sessions, with most areas reaching a substantial, lasting reduction in hair by session 6 to 8.

What to look forward to during your laser hair removal visit
Shave the area a day or two before your session. Do not wax, pluck, or tweeze beforehand, the laser needs the hair root and its pigment sitting in the follicle to find its target, and waxing pulls the whole thing out. Shaving leaves the root right where the laser wants it. At the appointment, your provider cleans the area, everyone wears eye protection, and the handpiece passes over your skin in quick pulses. Most people say each pulse feels like a warm rubber band snapped against the skin. Many devices cool the skin as they go, which takes the edge off. A small spot like the upper lip takes a few minutes; a large area like the legs or back runs longer, sometimes over an hour.
Laser hair removal is a series, never one and done, and there is a real biological reason. Hair grows in cycles, and the laser only disables a follicle that is in its active growth phase at the moment of treatment. At any given time only a portion of your hair is in that phase, so a single session can reach only a fraction of it. Spacing treatments a few weeks apart lets the resting follicles cycle into growth, where the next pass can catch them. Most areas need six or more sessions to get the full effect, and some people come back for the occasional maintenance session down the road. We offer a discount when you buy a series of six.
We price laser hair removal by the area treated, and sessions run from $75 to $375. Smaller areas sit at the low end, larger ones at the top. A few examples to show the range:
- Upper lip or chin — $75
- Underarms — $150
- Bikini — $175
- Full face — $200
- Full arms — $275
- Back — $325
- Full legs — $375
Your exact price depends on the area or areas you want treated, and we set it at your consultation. Downtime is mild. Right after a session the skin is usually a little pink and puffy around the follicles, close to a light sunburn, and that settles within a few hours to a couple of days. Most people head straight back to their day.
Avoid sun and self-tan for 4 weeks before each session
Before your first laser hair removal session
Whether laser is right for you depends first on your hair. Because the laser chases pigment, it works best on dark hair, and fastest when there is good contrast between dark hair and lighter skin. It does not work on white, gray, blonde, or red hair, there is simply not enough pigment in those hairs for the light to grab. If that is the hair you want gone, laser is not your tool, and we will steer you toward electrolysis, which treats each follicle one at a time regardless of color and is the only method the FDA recognizes for truly permanent removal.
Skin tone matters too. Older lasers were only safe on very fair skin, but with the right laser and settings a much wider range of skin tones can be treated today. On deeper or freshly tanned skin the light struggles to tell hair pigment from skin pigment, which raises the risk of burns or color changes, so the settings have to be chosen carefully at a consultation. Come in without a fresh tan, and skip the tanning bed and self-tanner beforehand. If your real concern is sun spots or redness rather than hair, that is a different job, our IPL photo facial handles pigment, not hair.
Side effects are usually minor and short: redness, mild swelling, and a warm, tender feeling that fades over hours to a few days. Less often, usually from wrong settings or a broken no-tan rule, you can see blistering, crusting, or temporary lightening or darkening of the skin. Between sessions, keep the area out of direct sun and use broad-spectrum SPF, since treated skin is more sensitive to light. You can keep shaving, but do not wax or pluck, because that pulls out the follicles the next session needs.
A few things mean waiting or a different plan. We do not perform laser during pregnancy. Some medications make skin more sensitive to light, certain antibiotics and other photosensitizers, so bring your full medication list. We also avoid treating over an active infection or cold-sore outbreak, and we do not laser directly over a tattoo, because the ink absorbs the light like pigment and can burn.

One honest comparison to close on. Waxing is a fine choice when you want smooth skin now, but it is temporary, the follicle keeps working and the hair is back in a few weeks. Laser is the option when you are tired of fighting the same hair over and over. Laser hair removal at The Spa by Sheena is performed by our licensed medical team under our medical director, Dr. Arledge, a plastic surgeon, at the spa we have run in Lubbock since 2016. Book online or call (806) 701-5840. We do not bill insurance, since hair removal is cosmetic.
FAQ
Your questions, answered
We’ve answered some of the most common questions below to help make your experience simple, transparent, and stress-free.
Laser hair removal uses concentrated light energy at a specific wavelength to target melanin (pigment) in the hair follicle. The light passes through the skin and is absorbed by the pigment in the hair, generating heat that damages the follicle's ability to regrow hair. Multiple sessions are needed because hair grows in cycles and laser only kills hair in the active growth phase.
How does laser hair removal work?
A series of multiple sessions is required to achieve permanent hair reduction—most patients need a series of treatments spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart to target hair in active growth phases. Facial hair often needs more sessions due to hormonal influence. After your initial series, occasional maintenance treatments keep results long-term. Hormonal changes (pregnancy, PCOS, menopause) can trigger new hair growth that needs touch-ups.
How many laser hair removal sessions will I need?
Most patients describe it as a rubber band snap. Our diode laser has built-in cooling that significantly reduces discomfort compared to older devices. Sensitive areas (bikini, underarms, upper lip) feel more than other zones. Topical numbing is available if requested—most people don't need it.
Does laser hair removal hurt?
Yes—with the right laser. Our diode laser is safe across the Fitzpatrick skin scale, including dark skin tones. Older lasers (alexandrite, IPL for hair) carried higher risk on darker skin. We use Nd:YAG capabilities for the deepest skin tones. We screen carefully and never use the wrong device for your skin type.
Is laser hair removal safe for dark skin?
Almost any area with unwanted hair: face (upper lip, chin, sideburns, neck), underarms, arms, legs, bikini line, Brazilian, back, chest, abdomen. We treat both men and women. The most common areas are face, underarms, bikini line, and legs for women; back, chest, and neck for men.
What areas can be treated with laser hair removal?
Permanent hair reduction is the goal—and the FDA-recognized claim. Most treated areas see a lasting, significant reduction in hair after a complete series. Some patients will see hormonal hair return (pregnancy, PCOS, menopause) that needs maintenance treatments. The bulk of treated hair is gone permanently.
How long do laser hair removal results last?
Yes—and you should. Shaving doesn't affect laser results because the hair shaft above the skin isn't what the laser targets. Don't wax, pluck, or use depilatory creams between sessions—those remove the hair from the root, which is exactly what the laser needs to target. Stick with shaving only.
Can I shave between laser sessions?
Shave the area 24 hours before treatment—the hair stubble guides the laser but skin needs to be smooth. Avoid sun exposure, tanning, and self-tanner for 4 weeks before. Skip retinoids on the area for 5 days before. Come with clean, product-free skin. We'll review aftercare at the appointment.
How do I prepare for a laser hair removal appointment?
No real downtime. Treated area may be slightly red and feel like a mild sunburn for a few hours—up to 24 hours for sensitive skin. Use aloe or a cooling moisturizer if needed. SPF for 7 days after on exposed areas. Hair will appear to grow for 1–2 weeks, then shed—this is normal.
What's the recovery from laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal ranges $75–$375 per session depending on the area treated. Series of 6 sessions: discounted pricing available. Members receive reduced per-session cost. Multiple sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart are required for permanent hair reduction; total count varies by area and individual response.
How much does laser hair removal cost in Lubbock?
If you're pregnant, recently tanned, taking Accutane (or have within 6 months), have active herpes outbreak in the treatment area, are on certain photosensitive medications, or have an active skin infection in the treatment area. We screen at consultation. Some hormonal medications can also affect treatment effectiveness.
When should I avoid laser hair removal?
Yes—we treat men regularly. Most common areas: beard line cleanup (not the full beard usually), neck, back, chest, shoulders. Some men opt for full beard removal—we'll discuss permanence before committing. Pricing is the same as for women.
Can men get laser hair removal?
Laser uses a single focused wavelength. IPL uses a broad spectrum of light. Laser is generally more effective per session, less painful with proper cooling, and safer across skin tones. We use a true laser (not IPL) for hair removal—the results are more reliable and the safety profile is better.
What's the difference between laser hair removal and IPL hair removal?
Treated hair in the active growth phase is permanently destroyed. New hair growth from hormonal triggers (pregnancy, menopause, hormonal medication, PCOS) is possible. Most patients see permanent reduction of the bulk of treated hair, with occasional maintenance for new growth.
Will the hair grow back?
Book a complimentary consultation. We'll examine the area, discuss skin type, and design a series with honest pricing. First-time laser patients: we may do a small test patch before the full first session. Call (806) 701-5840 or book online.
