What is plasma pen treatment?

The plasma pen is a skin-tightening treatment, and it works differently from anything that adds volume or relaxes a muscle. A handheld device creates a tiny plasma arc, a small spark of ionized gas that never quite touches the skin. The arc makes a controlled micro-injury at a precise point on the surface, and the heat travels a little deeper to wake up the fibroblasts, the cells that build collagen. As the skin heals, it tightens. That is the whole idea. A small, deliberate injury, and your body answers it with new collagen.

Because it firms rather than fills, the plasma pen is aimed at lax and crepey skin, fine lines, and heavy or hooded upper eyelids, the places where skin has loosened and you want it to draw back. It is a different tool from an injectable. If your concern is lost volume in the cheeks or lips, that is the job of dermal fillers, and softening the lines that come from muscle movement is what neurotoxin does. What to expect from plasma pen treatment

The treatment is performed under topical numbing. Patients describe brief warmth or stinging during the actual treatment. The session takes 30 to 90 minutes depending on the area.

Significant swelling for 2 to 5 days, especially around the eyes if eyelids are treated. Carbon-dot scabs are visible for 5 to 7 days. Plan social downtime accordingly.

Strict sun avoidance for 8 to 12 weeks (use SPF 30 or higher daily). Keep treated areas dry initially. Do not pick at scabs. Mineral makeup can be applied after 24 hours. Final tightening visible at 8 to 12 weeks.

Every plasma pen treatment at The Spa starts with a consultation, not the device. We look at your skin, go over your health history and the medications you take, and decide together whether this is the right treatment for you or whether something else fits better. On the day, we numb the area first, then work across it point by point with the plasma arc, leaving a grid of tiny dots where each spark lands. It is priced at $800 per area. Fuller results often take a series rather than one visit, and we will tell you honestly at the consultation whether one session or a few makes sense for what you want to change.

Here is the part a lot of pages leave out. Handheld plasma and fibroblast pens are not FDA-cleared for aesthetic skin tightening. The FDA has said this therapy does not have clearance or approval for any procedure meant to improve the appearance of the skin, and the published evidence for it is still limited. That does not make it useless, but it does mean the treatment lives or dies on who is holding the pen. In untrained hands it can cause real harm, including burns, scarring, and lasting changes in skin color, either darker or lighter. The risk is higher on deeper skin tones, which is why we are cautious there and will often patch test first or point you toward a safer option.

Some people consider the plasma pen a non-surgical option for mild eyelid laxity, and that can be a fair conversation to have. We will not sell it to you as a replacement for surgery. If your laxity is significant, a surgical procedure like blepharoplasty is the honest answer, and we will say so. Plan for visible healing. Each point the pen touches forms a small carbon crust, a tiny dark dot, and those dots stay put for about seven to ten days before they flake off on their own. Do not pick them. Picking is the fastest way to turn a normal-healing dot into a scar or a dark mark. Once the crusts fall away, the fresh skin underneath is pink and delicate, and it needs strict sun protection while it settles, because sun on healing skin is what drives pigment changes. The tightening is not instant either. Your skin keeps building collagen for weeks after the dots are gone, so what you see at two weeks is not the final result.

Be realistic about what it can do. The plasma pen suits mild to moderate laxity: crepey skin, fine lines, a slightly heavy lid. It is not a facelift and will not do a facelift's job. That is not a knock on the treatment, just the truth about where it fits.

A few people should not have this treatment, or should wait on it. Skip it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have an active skin infection or an open wound in the area, or if you tend to form keloid or raised scars. If you have taken isotretinoin (Accutane) recently, your skin needs time to heal normally again before any wounding treatment, so tell us. Photosensitizing medications and a history of cold sores are worth mentioning too. We go through all of this at the consultation, and if the plasma pen is not right for you, we would rather say so than book you. Recovery is about 10 days. Day 1–3: visible swelling and pinpoint scabs across treated area. Day 4–7: scabs darken and flake off (do not pick). Day 8–10: pink skin underneath transitions to normal tone. Plan around social events—plasma pen creates visible downtime.
