What is electrolysis?

Electrolysis is permanent hair removal done one follicle at a time. A trained provider slides a fine probe into the natural opening of a hair follicle and sends a small electrical current down to the root. That current destroys the cells responsible for growing the hair. Treat a follicle properly and it does not grow hair again.

Here is the distinction that sets electrolysis apart from every other method. The FDA recognizes electrolysis as the only form of permanent hair removal. Laser, by contrast, is cleared for permanent hair reduction, a real and lasting thinning, but not the same claim. If you have weighed the two, that is the heart of it: laser hair removal reduces, electrolysis removes.

It also works where laser cannot. Because electrolysis targets the follicle itself and not the pigment in the hair, it works on any hair color and any skin tone. White, gray, blonde, and red hair respond the same as dark hair. So does deep or tanned skin, which laser has to treat with caution. When color or contrast rules laser out, electrolysis is usually the answer.

What to expect from electrolysis

At your appointment the provider works methodically, following the hair pattern and treating follicles one by one. The probe is about the width of the hair itself and goes into the existing follicle opening, not through the skin. You will feel a brief warmth or a small pinch as each follicle is treated. Most people find it manageable, especially on smaller areas, and a numbing cream is an option if you want one. Because the work is done follicle by follicle, a small patch like the chin goes quickly, while a larger area takes proportionally longer.

Electrolysis clears an area over a series of visits, not in one sitting, and there is a biological reason. Hair grows in cycles, and only the follicles in their active growth phase can be treated effectively at any given time. The rest are resting or shedding and will surface later. Spacing your sessions lets those follicles cycle into view, where the next visit can reach them. Downtime is minor. Right after a session the treated skin is usually a little red and slightly swollen around the follicles, and that settles within a few hours to a day or so. Every so often tiny scabs form over the next couple of days as the skin heals. Leave them alone and they fall off on their own; picking at them is the one thing that can turn a normal reaction into a lasting mark. Most people head straight back to their day.

Better for small areas than full body

It helps to know when to choose electrolysis and when to reach for something else. Laser is faster over large areas of dark hair and is often the better first move for a full back or both legs of coarse dark hair. Electrolysis is the choice when the hair has no pigment for a laser to find, when you want a specific area gone for good rather than thinned, or when you are finishing off the stray hairs laser left behind. Plenty of people use both, and we will tell you honestly which one fits your hair.

If you are comparing it to waxing, the trade is permanence for speed. Waxing clears a whole area in minutes and is a fine choice for smooth skin now, but the follicle keeps working and the hair is back in a few weeks. Electrolysis is slower and works follicle by follicle, and what it removes is meant to stay gone.

Aftercare is simple. Keep the area clean and hands off for the first day, and skip anything that irritates fresh follicles: heavy sweating, a hot workout, sun, a tanning bed, or makeup layered over the spot right away. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen on treated skin that sees the sun. If a scab shows up, do not pick it.

A few situations call for a conversation first. We ask about a pacemaker or other implanted electrical device, since electrolysis uses a current and that pairing needs clearance from your doctor before we begin. We generally hold off during pregnancy and ask you to check with your OB. We also avoid treating over an active skin infection or a cold-sore outbreak in the area.
