POST CARE GUIDE

Kybella Aftercare

Kybella uses deoxycholic acid, the same molecule your body makes to help break down dietary fat, to permanently destroy fat cells under the chin. The trade-off is a swelling-heavy recovery: the treated area puffs up for the first several days (the bullfrog phase), then settles over the following weeks. This guide from The Spa by Sheena in Lubbock walks you through it start to finish, from the cold-compress routine and the no-NSAID rule to what firmness and numbness actually mean, the 4-to-6-week point where your contour appears, and the 12-week mark when a single session's result is final. Becca (MSN, FNP-C) and Angie (RN) perform every Kybella treatment here.

Your Kybella recovery at a glance

What happens, and when

Here is the path from treatment day to final result.

Days 1 to 3

Expect the bullfrog

The first three days are the loudest. Swelling under your chin builds fast and usually peaks around day 2 to 4, so the chin looks fuller before it looks slimmer; patients nicknamed it the bullfrog phase for a reason. That swelling is the deoxycholic acid rupturing fat cells, which means it reads as progress, not a setback. Ice the area in short stints, keep your head up when you rest, and do not schedule anything you want to be photographed at this week.

Week 1 to 2

Cold, no NSAIDs

By week one the peak has passed, but tightness, tenderness, and patchy numbness under the chin can linger. Keep using cold compresses for comfort, and reach for Tylenol (acetaminophen) if you need something for soreness, not ibuprofen, aspirin, naproxen, or Aleve, which thin the blood and bruise you more. Skip alcohol while you are still swollen. The numbness here is nerve irritation from the injection and fades on its own over the next several weeks.

4 to 6 Weeks

See your contour

Most of the visible swelling is gone by week 4 to 6, and this is when the under-chin contour actually starts to show. Fat clearance keeps developing quietly beneath the surface through about week 12, so what you see at six weeks is not the finished result. If a second session is part of your plan, we will not book it until this window has played out and your injector can judge what is left to treat.

How to care for the under-chin area through swelling

How to Care for the Treated Area After Kybella

Gentle skincare on day 2

Leave the area alone on day one. From day two, you can gently cleanse the neck and chin with a mild, fragrance-free soap, then pat it dry rather than rubbing. Hold off on retinol, glycolic acid, and other strong actives on the neck until the swelling has settled, usually around week two, since inflamed skin reacts to them more harshly than usual. There is no special product to buy here; plain and gentle is the whole assignment while the skin is inflamed.

Tylenol only for discomfort

For soreness or tenderness, use acetaminophen, sold as Tylenol. Steer clear of ibuprofen, aspirin, naproxen, and Aleve for about four days: these NSAIDs thin the blood and make bruising worse, and after a fresh round of injections that is the opposite of what you want. Alcohol does the same, so hold off on that too while you are bruised. If Tylenol is not touching the discomfort, call us before you add anything else to the mix.

Hydrate generously

Drink plenty of water through the first week or so. Good hydration keeps you comfortable while your body does the slow work of processing and clearing the fat cells that Kybella has broken down. It is a supporting habit, not a cure; it will not speed the result on its own, but staying well hydrated beats being dehydrated on top of the swelling and soreness. Warm broths and water-heavy foods count too if plain water gets boring.

Loose tops only

Reach for loose, wide-collared tops for the first week. Turtlenecks, tight crew necks, and anything that hugs the jaw press right on the treated area and make it more tender and more swollen. Button-downs and scoop necks keep the pressure off. It is a small thing, but the under-chin skin is genuinely sore for several days, and what you wear is the easiest variable to control while it heals.

Sleep elevated (first 3 nights)

Sleep with your head raised on two pillows for the first three nights. Lying flat lets fluid settle under the chin overnight, which is why the swelling is almost always worst first thing in the morning. Propping up helps it drain and takes the edge off that early puffiness. A recliner works just as well if that is more comfortable while the area is tender, and it keeps you from rolling onto the treated side in your sleep.

Cold compress (first 48 hours)

For the first 48 hours, cold is your best tool. Apply a cold compress to the under-chin area for 15 to 20 minutes at a time, then give the skin a break before the next round; this blunts swelling and eases soreness through the most inflamed stretch. Always wrap the ice or cold pack in a clean cloth and never rest it straight on bare skin, which can cause a cold burn. Do not press hard or massage the area while you ice it.

Significant swelling for 5 to 7 days — what is normal

What's Normal: Kybella Downtime & Swelling

Normal, temporary, and part of the process.

Firmness and small hard areas

Firm patches, small nodules, or a band of hardness under the chin are expected as the tissue remodels. This is called induration, and it can last anywhere from four to twelve weeks, softening gradually as the dissolved fat clears and the inflammation winds down. You do not need to massage it unless your injector tells you to. If a firm spot is still there past the twelve-week mark, or if any single lump feels like it is growing rather than shrinking, mention it at your follow-up so we can take a look.

Swelling resolution (1 to 6 weeks)

The bulk of the swelling clears within one to two weeks. After that, a milder puffiness can stick around as long as six weeks, and it is usually worst first thing in the morning; sleeping with your head propped up helps that. This residual swelling does not change your outcome, it only delays when you will see the finished contour. If the whole area still looks visibly swollen past the six-week mark, bring it up at your next visit.

Numbness (up to 12 weeks)

Numbness, tingling, or a dulled sensation under the chin is one of the most common after-effects, and it can be one of the longest-lasting, often present for several weeks and, in some people, up to a few months. It comes from temporary irritation of the small sensory nerves in the treated area, not damage, and it resolves on its own. It does not mean anything is wrong with your result. If numbness ever comes paired with a drooping or uneven smile, though, that is different, so call us.

Peak swelling (days 2 to 4)

Swelling almost always peaks between day 2 and day 4, not on the day of treatment. This is the bullfrog phase, when the submental area can look markedly larger and feel taut before it turns the corner. Plan your calendar around it: this is the stretch to skip weddings, work presentations, and anything on camera. From there it eases week over week, though a softer round of puffiness can hang on for a while after the worst is over.

What's normal across the first 2 weeks

Across the first two weeks, expect swelling, bruising, tenderness, numbness, and a few firm or lumpy spots under the chin. Every one of those is part of how Kybella works: the deoxycholic acid breaks down fat cells, and your body spends the following weeks clearing the debris. It can look and feel worse before it settles, which throws people off. On its own, none of it is a complication; it is the treated area doing exactly what it is supposed to do.

What to avoid while swelling resolves

What to Avoid After Kybella

Facials & Aggressive Skincare

No facials, microcurrent, dermaplaning, or aggressive skincare on the chin and neck for 2 weeks. Save these treatments for after the swelling resolves.

restriction-icon-gold.png

Tight Collars

No turtlenecks, tight collared shirts, or chin straps for the first week. Pressure on the treated area increases tenderness and can shift product.

restriction-icon-gold.png

Massage

Do not massage, press, or rub the treated area for at least 7 to 10 days. Pressure can spread the medication to unintended areas and risk affecting nearby facial muscles.

restriction-icon-gold.png

Strenuous Exercise

Avoid vigorous exercise, sweating, saunas, and swimming for 72 hours. Elevated heart rate and blood flow worsen swelling and bruising.

restriction-icon-gold.png

Alcohol

Avoid alcohol for 72 hours. Alcohol thins the blood and worsens bruising — and given the visible inflammation phase, you do not want anything that prolongs it.

restriction-icon-gold.png

NSAIDs

Avoid NSAIDs (ibuprofen, aspirin, Aleve, Motrin, naproxen) for 4 days. These increase bruising and may dampen the inflammatory response that drives fat-cell clearance.

When to Call The Spa After Kybella

Contact The Spa immediately if you experience:

Swelling, bruising, tenderness, numbness, and firm areas under the chin are all expected after Kybella; they mean the deoxycholic acid is doing its job, and most of what you feel in the first two weeks is normal. Call The Spa by Sheena promptly, though, if you notice any of the following:

  • An uneven smile, a drooping corner of the mouth, or weakness in the muscles around your mouth. This can mean the injection has irritated the marginal mandibular nerve. It almost always resolves on its own, but we want to document it and check you.
  • Trouble swallowing (dysphagia) that does not ease within a day, or any difficulty breathing. Difficulty breathing is an emergency.
  • Pain that keeps intensifying after the first 72 hours instead of easing.
  • Open sores, skin breakdown, drainage, or pus at any injection site.
  • Signs of infection, such as spreading redness after day two, heat, hardening that expands, or a fever.

During business hours, call us at (806) 701-5840. For difficulty breathing, severe swallowing problems, or anything that feels like an emergency, go to the nearest emergency room first and let us know as soon as you can.

For non-urgent questions, or to plan the rest of your series, reach out any time. Every Kybella session here is performed by Becca (MSN, FNP-C) or Angie (RN) under our medical director, Dr. Arledge. You can review the treatment itself on our Kybella page, and once your profile is where you want it, many patients refine the jawline further with jawline filler or explore our other dermal fillers.

FAQ

Your questions,  answered

We’ve answered some of the most common questions below to help make your experience simple, transparent, and stress-free.

Kybella is an FDA-approved injection containing deoxycholic acid—a molecule your body naturally produces to break down fat. We inject it into the fat under the chin ("double chin"), and it permanently destroys those fat cells. Your body then clears them out over the following weeks. Results are permanent because the cells are gone.

What is Kybella and what does it treat?

Treatments are scheduled at least 4 weeks apart. A series of up to 6 treatments may be needed—the exact number depends on the amount of fat being treated and your individual goals. We assess at each visit and stop when we've reached your goal.

How many Kybella sessions will I need?

There's burning and stinging during and immediately after injection that lasts 10–20 minutes. We apply ice before and after to minimize. Most patients tolerate it well; some describe it as the most uncomfortable injectable they've had. The trade-off: permanent fat destruction.

Does Kybella hurt?

Recovery is about 14 days. Significant swelling under the chin for the first week—you'll look more puffy before you look slimmer. This is the deoxycholic acid actively destroying fat cells. Bruising is common. Mild numbness for 1–4 weeks is normal. Plan around social events.

What's the recovery from Kybella?

Results may be seen as early as 4 to 6 weeks; full results from a complete series are typically visible at 12 weeks after the last session. Each session adds to the previous; the cumulative effect is visible chin and jawline definition.

When will I see Kybella results?

Kybella is $650 per syringe. Per-session cost depends on the amount of fat being treated (typically 1–2 syringes per session). A series of up to 6 sessions may be needed. Full series typically runs $1,300–$5,200 depending on size of treatment area. Members receive discounted pricing.

How much does Kybella cost in Lubbock?

Yes—the fat cells we destroy are gone. They don't regenerate. The remaining fat cells in the area can still expand if you gain weight, but the total volume of fat in that pocket is permanently reduced. Most patients maintain results with stable weight.

Are Kybella results permanent?

Best candidates: adults with moderate-to-significant fat under the chin and good skin elasticity. Patients with very loose skin under the chin may need a skin-tightening treatment (RF microneedling, plasma pen) in addition to or instead of Kybella. We assess skin quality at consultation. Pregnant/breastfeeding patients should wait.

Am I a candidate for Kybella?

FDA approval is for submental fat (under the chin). Off-label use includes small fat pockets on the jowls, bra fat, knees, and inner thighs, though we limit off-label use to specific cases. For body fat in larger areas, treatments like CoolSculpting are more appropriate. Discuss at consultation.

Can Kybella treat fat anywhere besides the chin?

Kybella is non-surgical, with no scars, no general anesthesia, and recovery in days. Surgery (liposuction or neck lift) addresses both fat and loose skin in one procedure, with one recovery. Kybella is better for moderate fat and good skin elasticity. Surgery is better for significant fat plus skin laxity. We'll discuss honestly at consultation.

Kybella vs surgery—which should I choose?

Common: significant swelling (expected), bruising, mild numbness in the treated area for weeks. Rare: nerve injury causing temporary smile asymmetry (resolves over weeks-months), trouble swallowing (very rare), injection site hardness. We're trained in the exact anatomical placement to minimize risks.

What are Kybella side effects?

Book a complimentary consultation. We'll evaluate the fat pad and your skin, discuss whether Kybella, RF skin tightening, or a combination is right for you, and give you honest pricing. Call (806) 701-5840 or book online.
